Welcome to the Web Site for the Association of Physiotherapists in Energy Medicine
[ACPEM]

We are a group of physiotherapists and related healthcare professionals who are asking difficult questions such as:

  • Why do our patients get better?
  • Why don't our patients get better?
  • What exactly is happening within the therapeutic relationship/ interaction?
  • How gentle is gentle?
  • What is the meaning of life?

We are putting the spotlight on the inside, the boundaries and yes even the outside of physiotherapy in our search for understanding, and truth (as we know it.)

The reason:
To explore the wide range of bioenergy therapies based upon the concepts of energy medicine
To improve our practice, efficacy, the care of our patients and ourselves in a truly holistic way.

We have a reputation for openness, honesty and care towards each other, providing a safe ambience for open discussions and brainstorming with just a dash of humour.

This association provides a broad forum for enquiry, debate, and presentation of Energy Medicine concepts.   The association does not exist to promote any particular therapy, but rather to look at the underlying principles.

An increasing number of physiotherapists are incorporating bioenergy therapies into clinical practice. Whether these therapies are classed as bioenergy, subtle energy, complementary or alternative
, their common philosophy is that illness, injury and disease do not exist in isolation. They affect the whole person--body, mind and spirit.

Background to ACPEM

This association was formed in April 1997 by chartered physiotherapists interested in exploring the wide range of Bioenergy Therapies and the underlying concepts and practices of Energy Medicine.

Feb 1996: Buxton, The British Healing Energy Therapy Association (BHETA) was founded by Steve Gibbs.

Oct 1997: BHETA divided into a privately directed training and research organisation, now forming the Healing Energy Therapy Academy Ltd. (HETA) with Steve Gibbs as Director.

April 1998: the remainder of the group met at the CSP headquarters, London, to reorganise itself into a formal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Bioenergy Therapies (ACPBET) whose remit was one of inquiry.

Sept 1998: ACPBET received official recognition by the CSP UK as a designated Clinical Interest Group (CIG) within the Society

April 2001: the title was changed from Bioenergy Therapies to Energy Medicine, (ACPEM) a term commonly used to describe the types of therapies used by our members as well as the underpinning philosophy.
